GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national level examination conducted throughout India by IISc (Indian Institute of Science) & IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) on behalf of Department of Higher Education, National Coordination Board – DATE, and MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources Development), Government of India. The GATE scores are used during the admissions in prestigious colleges of country in post-graduate courses. After the results are out, the candidates clearing the exam should wait for Gate counseling dates to be announced so that they can go through a valid procedure to take admissions in college of their choice.

Eligibility Criteria to GATE Examination

The following is the eligibility criteria for students who wish to take the Gate examination:

  • A candidate must be a bachelor degree holder in Engineering technology / architecture or he/she must be appearing in final year of these courses.
  • A candidate must be Master’s degree holder in any branch of Mathematics / Science / Computer Applications /Statistics or equivalent branch or he/she must be appearing in final year of these courses.
  • A candidate appearing in second or higher year of four-year integrated Master degree program or any dual degree program in Engineering / Technology.
  •  A candidate should be in fourth or higher year of 5-year integrated Master degree program or any dual degree program in Engineering / Technology.

Who Sets Test Paper for GATE Examination?

The joint committee of Indian Institute of Science and 7 IITs are the paper setters for GATE examination. This examination is conducted every year in the month January/February. The application forms are made available in the month of September and the last date of filling the form is in the month of October. So, those aspirants who are willing to study further in post graduation programs after engineering can fill this form.
The exam fee for women / ST / ST / PWD candidates applying for GATE examination is Rs. 750 while that for all the other candidates is Rs. 1500.





GATE Examination Results

After a candidate has appeared in the Exam, he/she is eagerly waiting for the results. The results for GATE exam are generally announced in the month of March. After clearing the GATE examination, one can wait for the GATE counseling dates to be announced.

GATE Counseling for IITs

The IITs have their own counseling procedure. The institutions along with IITs under GATE will be declaring the counseling dates after the results. A notification for the counseling will be declared. Candidates who have qualified the criteria for counseling should apply for the notification. The GATE scores and the academic performance will be taken into consideration and after that the candidates will be called for GD test. The seats in different institutions under GATE will be allotted to students on the basis of performance in GD Test.

GATE Counseling Procedure

The GATE counseling procedure is divided into three phases that are mentioned below:

Online Registration

The candidates who have qualified in the GATE examination can register themselves for counseling. After the registration, the candidates should pay the fee online and then confirm the registration. After the fee has been submitted, the candidates can fill their choices of programmes and institutions.

Online Seat Allotment

On the basis of their choices, the candidates are allotted the seats. But yes, the students with better scores are given the first preferences. Each student will be reported personally about the allotted seat.

Getting Admissions in Allotted Institutions

During the admission procedure, the candidate must be able to produce original documents as mentioned above with the photocopies. The candidates must confirm their admissions in specified time otherwise the seat will be allotted to other candidate.
